How I Became a Hairstylist
I never imagined I would become a hairstylist. In fact, it’s a journey I stumbled into, one that I never saw coming but now realize was exactly where I was meant to be.
People often ask me if I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist, and my answer is a firm no. My path to this career was anything but planned—there were unexpected twists, turns, and even a few hair disasters along the way.
It all started when I moved from Sacramento to Fairfield, CA, during my senior year of high school. Leaving behind my friends, family, and my trusted hairstylist was a huge transition. I had always relied on my stylist to keep my hair looking its best, and now, I had to figure out how to do it on my own.
When it came time for my next appointment, my mom surprised me by saying I’d need to drive myself. Nervous about the unfamiliar roads, I decided to skip the appointment and try to manage my hair myself. I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply, picked up a few products, and attempted to recreate the look my stylist had given me.
With only a vague memory of what she had done, I started experimenting in front of my bathroom mirror. Days of trial and error followed—reapplying color, hopping in and out of the shower, only to end up with beautifully colored but severely damaged hair. It was a mess.
In my family, hair was never just about appearance—it was sacred. We always saw it as a reflection of who we were, almost like the crown on our heads. Growing up, I was taught that hair holds power, beauty, identity, and most importantly-protection. So, when I saw the damage I had caused, it felt like a personal failure. My mom’s lecture, full of concern and disappointment, really hit home. That moment taught me just how important it is to maintain and honor the crown we wear every day.
Determined to fix the damage, I started researching online about hair care. Amid the sea of DIY tips, I came across an ad for a local cosmetology school. At first, I brushed it off, thinking cosmetology was only about makeup. But curiosity won out, and I filled out the inquiry form.
To my surprise, I got a call back almost immediately. A friendly voice on the other end shared all the details about the programs, hands-on training, and career opportunities. I decided to sign up for a tour—and that’s when I fell in love with the world of hairstyling. What started as a desperate attempt to fix a hair disaster turned into a passion I never expected. The idea of transforming someone’s look and boosting their confidence was something I couldn’t resist.
As graduation from beauty school approached, a wonderful opportunity presented itself. Hot Shots Salon and Spa reached out after seeing some of my work and offered me a position as a receptionist and assistant until I got my license. That was the moment I knew—this was exactly where I was meant to be. I hadn’t been actively seeking it, but the opportunity found me anyway.
Now, I’m grateful every day that I didn’t need to chase what I thought I wanted. I’ve learned that sometimes the best things in life come when you least expect them—especially when you’re busy fixing a mess you made along the way. Life has a funny way of guiding you to where you need to be, even if you don’t realize it at first.
And here I am, loving every minute of being a hairstylist—doing what I love and helping others feel their best. 💇🏽♀️✨
